This piece was completed in 2000.
It is carved from two pieces of Iroko.
This wood was donated to the Amistad project by from Sierra Leone.

The back piece is 10" by 16."
The figure is approximately 10" tall, including the base
The frame is steel, completed by Butch Heal of Camden Welding Works, Camden, ME.

Figurehead depicts a man struggling to escape the slave ship, the Amistad, if not slavery in general. The dramatic grain of the backpiece is natural;
it is a slice of heartwood.
